The word sanatana means "eternal"... and dharma is sometimes translated as "duty". However, if we go to the etymological meaning of the word, we will find the root dhri, which means "to maintain". To be more precise, I would say that dhri indicates that which maintains things harmoniously. That is, something that is supported or maintained by the essential quality within itself....

In other words, dharma is the essential or inherent nature of something. It is its very reason for being...

For example, the dharma of water is to be wet, of salt — to be salty, of sugar — to be sweet...

Hinduism, for me, is the search... the discovery of the eternally essential quality... within you... the inherent... the existential, the authentic....

Sanatana—dharma is search for the eternal essence that maintains your existence... for what you have never lost... It is to remember what you have never known... It is to go after the illogical, the impossible...
