saṅkaro narakāyaiva
kula—ghnānāṁ kulasya ca
patanti pitaro hy eṣāṁ
lupta—piṇḍodaka—kriyāḥ
An increase of unwanted population brings about a state of infernal life, both to the family and the destroyers of the family tradition. By ceasing the celebrations of sacred food and water offerings, the ancestors of such degraded families also fall down.
In the Srimad Bhagavatam 11.5.41 it says:
devarṣi—bhūtāpta—nṛṇāṁ pitṝṇāṁ
na kiṅkaro nāyam ṛṇī ca rājan
sarvātmanā yaḥ śaraṇaṁ śaraṇyaṁ
gato mukundaṁ parihṛtya kartam
Meaning:
"Anyone who had accepted the shelter of the Lotus Feet of Mukunda, the bestower of liberation, and has abandoned any kind of obligation, and had seriously adopted the path of devotional service, doesn't have obligations or duties to the demigods, the sages, the family members, the humanity, the forefathers or other living entities."
