Lord, in the silence of this day which is being born,

I come to ask you for peace, wisdom and strength.

Today I want to see the world with eyes full of love.|

To be patient, comprehensive, humble, mild and good.

To see your children behind the appearances,

as you yourself see them,

so that I could thus appreciate the goodness of each and every one.

Close my ears to any gossip.

Guard my tongue from any evil talk.

Let only blessing thoughts remain in me.

I want to be so well—meaning and good

that anyone who approaches me shall feel your presence.

Cever me with your goodness Lord

and grant that in this day I shall reflect you.

Vision of the Palm (Kara Darshanam)

In India it is considered very auspicious to look at ones own right hand palm when waking up. There is a very beautiful prayer that comes along with this act, which conceals a profound metaphysical meaning. The palm, out of which five fingers are born, symbolizes God, the Divine Controller of the five karmendriyas (organs of action). Here, God is evoked in His three aspects of creation (Saraswati, the consort of the god of creation, Brahma), preservation (Lakshmi, the consort of the god protection and nourishment, Vishnu) and destruction (Parvati, the consort of the god of dissolution and regeneration, Shiva). Thus, this act is a plea for the sanctification of all the actions performed by the organs during the day.

Karāgre vasate lakṣmīḥ

karamadhye sarasvatī

karamūle sthita gaurī

prabhāte karadarśanam

Befote rising up look at the palm of your hand

And perceive Lakshmi at the tip of your fingers,

Saraswati in the center of the palm, and Gauri in its base.

Prayer to Mother Earth (Bhumi Namaskara)

After kara drashanam, this second prayer is chanted, before stepping on mother earth with one's feet, before sunrise. They profound metaphorical meaning is the recognition of the establishment of polarity. The feet are considered impure because they correspond to the negative pole, while the head corresponds the positive.

Samudravasane devi

parvatastanamaṇḍale

viṣṇupatni namastubhyam

pādasparśam kṣamasva me

I bow to mother earth, the resplendent one,

The spouse of Vishnu, for whom the ocean is vesture,

And the mountains — her chest

And I ask for her forgiveness for trampling her with my feet.

Prayer to the Trinity of Planets (Navagraha Smarana)

Brahmā murāristripurāntakārī

bhānuḥ śaśī bhūmisuto budhaśca

guruśca śukraḥ śani rāhu ketavaḥ

kurvantu sarve mama suprabhātam

Early in the morning I pray to the three aspects of God, Brahma (the creative force), Vishnu (the power of conservation) and Shiva (the regenerating aspect), as well as to the sun and the planets: the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. May all of them grant me a good morning.

Holy and divine worshipped Trinity, one singular God in three aspects, I praise, glorify and thank you for all the gifts and grace you pour upon me, it is Your causeless goodness that saves me. I offer you my thoughts, words and actions and all that I am, as well as all the trials that this day will bring. Please bless us, that Your divine love will inspire and impel us to glorify you even more with our lives. Dear Lord, we pray and implore that you guide each and every one of our actions with Your divine inspiration, allow us to carry them out with Your precious help, that all our prayers and works will begin in You and conclude happily...
