The Pure Devotee

The great sage Narada Muni, a great pure devotee of the Lord, one day had the temptation to think that there is no one in the world that loves God more than him.

The all—knowing Lord read his heart and said, "Narada, go to the city on the bank of the Ganges and search for a devotee of mine who lives there, he is a great devotee and being in his presence will be very beneficial for you."

Narada did as he was told; he went to the city and found the devotee the Lord talked about. He was a simple farmer that woke up every morning very early, recited the Lord's Holy Name once, took his plow, and went to the field, there he worked very hard during the whole day. At night, when he was very tired, just before he went to sleep, he repeated again the Holy Name of God.

Narada thought to himself, how is possible that this karmi is a great devotee of God? He passes his days in earthly occupations and mundane life.

Then the Lord addressed to Narada and said, "Take a bowl, fill it to the brim with milk, and walk around the city with it in your hands. Do it without spilling even one drop of milk on the ground."

Narada did as he was told, even though he did not understand the reason.

When Narada returned the Lord asked him, "how many times did you remember me while walking around the city?"

Narada answered in shame, "not even once, my Lord, it was impossible because I was so concentrated on the bowl of milk, making sure no drop will spill..."

And the Lord said, "You were so absorbed in the simple chore of being attentive to the bowl that you forgot me completely. Pay attention to this humble peasant that at the moment he finished his obligation with his family and working hard all day long, he remember me twice a day.
