Ganesh Chaturthi - Lord Ganesh Appearance Day

Ganesh Chaturhi, a 10-day festival celebrating the birth of Lord Ganesha, is one of the most sacred and popular Hindu festivals. Also called Ninayak Chaturthi, it typically falls sometime between August 20th and September 15th.
Ganesha, who has a large belly and the head of an elephant topped with a tiara, is one of the best-known and most widely worshipped dieties in the Hindu religion, In fact, Ganesha is one of the five prime Hindu deities.
He is the Supreme God of Wisdom and Prosperity, the Lord of Success, and destroyer of evils and obstacles. The Lord of Beginnings, Ganesha is the deva of intellect and wisdom.
He is honored at the start of rituals and ceremonies and He guards entrances to temples and homes.
Lord Ganesha is the son of Shiva, God of Destruction, and Shiva's consort Parvati.

The story of Ganesha's birth is that one time while Parvati was bathing, she created a human figure from some unguent and balm. Parvati gave him life and asked him to guard the door while she bathed.
Shiva, meanwhile, was meditating on Mount Kailash, his abode. He chose that very moment to visit Parvati but the man-god she had posted at the door stopped him abruptly. Outraged that this stranger had the cheek to stop him, Shiva cut off his head. When he discovered he had killed Parvati’s son and fearing his wife's rage, Shiva immediately dispatched his ganas, or attendants, to get him the head of the first living creature they could find.
The first creature they came across was an elephant. As instructed, its head was chopped off and brought to Shiva who placed it on the body of Parvati’s son and brought him back to life. This elephant-headed God was welcomed into the first family of the Hindu heavens and named Ganesha or Ganapati, which means the chief of the ganas.
