Durga Puja
May 22, 2012 8:00 pm

Durga, the divine Mother of the universe, is the goddess who removes all physical, mental and spiritual miseries. She is the power behind creation, preservation and destruction, and through Her infinite love and compassion, She constantly protects her devotees from the evils of the world.
Mother Durga is a unified symbol of all divine forces which were manifested when the existence of the gods was threatened by evil forces. Each of the gods formed a part of Her body to destroy the demons. Durga, whose Sanskrit name means 'invincible', killed the powerful demon Mahishasur and all his great commanders.
Mother Durga is portrayed with eight or sometimes 10 hands representing the eight quadrants or ten directions in Hinduism. She is seated on a lion, representing her mastery over power, will and determination qualities necessary to conquer the ego.
